Israeli Soldiers Shoot Dead Palestinian in Gaza
GAZA (Reuters) -
Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) shot
dead a Palestinian in traditional Arab dress as he approached a
checkpoint outside a Jewish settlement on Thursday, in the
newest violence ahead of a U.S. push for Mideast peace.
Israeli military sources said the Palestinian entered a
security zone set up to protect a Jewish settlement and ignored
both calls to halt and warning shots fired in the air.
They said soldiers opened fire and hit the Palestinian when
he was about 50 meters from their checkpoint.
Palestinian medics said the unidentified man, in his
thirties, was wearing a traditional Arab dress that marked him
as a civilian and added that they suspected he was mentally
ill.
Also on Thursday, a 23-year-old Palestinian woman died of
wounds sustained last month when she was shot by Israeli
soldiers as she harvested crops with her daughter, Palestinian
medics said.
Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) is due in the region on
Saturday to promote a 'road map' for peace that calls for an
end to violence and Jewish settlement construction, a
resumption of talks and the establishment of a Palestinian
state by 2005.
At least 2,041 Palestinians and 737 Israelis have died
since the start of the Palestinian uprising for independence in
September 2000.
