Zaher al-Shuli, 35, was known in the area as he used to carry people on donkey back between his village of Asira al-Shamaliyeh and Nablus, five kilometres (3 miles) to the south, the sources said.

The circumstances of the incident were not immediately clear.

His death raised to 3,216 the number of people killed since the September 2000 launch of the uprising against the Israeli occupation, including 2,426 Palestinians and 730 Israelis, according to an AFP count.
